Functional, creative web design
This project has been inspired by portal start pages such as iGoogle and the applications that run on these start pages.
It is intended that the WebTop will be packaged for business or subscribed to by individuals to host their core applications, so they have one place to visit for all of their applications. Data will be stored centrally so you will always have the most up to date version and it is cross browser compatible and operating system independent.
The WebTop provides the user with an application, development, delivery and execution platform; allowing web applications to be developed and run in a desktop-environment within a web browser. This extends the functionality of the browser and allows it to act more like a desktop. This removes operating system dependencies and compatibility issues, making the audience for the applications far greater. This also enables the WebTop to be fully portable being able to be used on any machine with internet access and web browser in order to use a core set of applications.
WebTop DevelopmentGadgets provide an interesting architecture where focus can be placed on providing the features relevant to the gadget and not worrying about its architecture (authentication, storage, framework etc.). These are inherited independently by the WebTop. Not needing the host application’s source code, a common user control and interface is all that is needed to use applications on the WebTop. So developers can concentrate on making the application do what it's supposed to do without worrying about architecture or limitations.
The implementation of the WebTop’s architecture has taken this into consideration so developers do not need to worry about Ajax and Java Scripts at all. Where this WebTop goes further than other Start Pages is that it intends to give full server side programming support and utilises PHP and MySQL, which are widely available. This can modified to be branded and include packages of specific applications required by any company.
